✓  Home office headset with noise reduction: challenges and benefits

The open space office is regularly cited for the noise and distractions it causes. However, lockdowns and teleworking have given rise to other, equally disturbing noises to be seen – and especially to be heard – as well as a difficulty in communicating due to a lack of adequate equipment. Teleworking has thus appeared in this crisis as a fallback solution. How can we best understand it and maintain good collaboration and concentration?

TELEWORKING: THE NEW NORMAL

Teleworking has been on everyone’s lips since the first lockdown forced companies to opt for this solution when possible. This promotes business continuity without endangering employees. This way of working, according to a Terra Nova survey in April 2020, seduced 58% of employees who experienced it on this occasion in France.

Since the Covid-19 crisis, teleworking does indeed seem to be more permanent as over three-quarters of EU employees want to continue to work from home at least occasionally, even without the restrictions (Eurofound survey, 2020).

WORKING AT HOME, AN IDEAL SOLUTION … THAT ALSO HAS ITS DISADVANTAGES?

Teleworking has now imposed itself in the private space. More freedom for some or hell for others, this new way of working divides.

A CSA survey for Malakoff Humanis published in May 2020 demonstrates that the home office seems to have attracted a majority of professionals: 70% of the employees questioned wish to remain working from home permanently or on a punctual basis.

This can be explained by the fear of going back outside and encountering the virus. Or it can also be because working at home has its advantages: less time in transport, a better balance between personal and professional life, the feeling of being more free … However, the experience is far from being so idyllic when teleworking becomes an obligation.

A French study conducted by Opinion Way notes that for 44% of people questioned (and even in 20% of managers), teleworking leads to more or less intense psychological distress and, in the greater majority, for women. This can be due to multiple reasons: incessant requests (emails, phone calls, videoconferences), a lack of tranquility at home due to domestic noise, or even a lack of space. To this, we can also add living conditions that differ from one person to another. One only has to live in a noisy neighborhood and/or a cramped apartment to realize that working from home is not necessarily the best solution.

Eurofound’s study shows that one-third of European employees have to deal with high quantitative demands at work, while one-quarter of employees report high emotional demands when teleworking (Eurofound, 2020).

ESTABLISH BETTER CONDITIONS FOR TELEWORKING

Companies are still in a middle ground today, between gradually resuming work in offices and continuing to work from home. In this regard, it is important to identify the difficulties the employees face and provide them with a solution. As the INRS explains, companies will have to develop a framework that respects the health of the employees.

The social partners discuss the future modalities of home offices and the rights of employees. This will include finding common grounds on the equipment that should be given to them in order to work in the best conditions.

In addition, the National Agency for the Improvement of Working Conditions – the Anac-Aract network – offers to support companies in this QVT process.

HOME OFFICE HEADSET WITH NOISE REDUCTION: CHALLENGES AND BENEFITS

Through company or individual agreements, the employer generally provides the necessary equipment for its employees: computer, telephone, 4G, WiFi connection, printer and any other necessary technology depending on the sector. Among these items that promote better collaboration and concentration, noise-cancelling headsets seem to solve several difficulties encountered by professionals and thus become the new essential tool for home offices.

1- Maintain communication with colleagues and partners. Teleworking, when imposed, carries greater risks of isolation, especially in the face of an anxiety-provoking health situation. No longer, or poorly, conversing with colleagues seems to be a lack that a home office headset with noise reduction fills. Even more so when video conferencing issues were rising during this period, one of the issues being poor sound quality.

According to a recent study conducted by Ipsos, 73% of professionals say they encounter comprehension difficulties during phone conversations and 74% during collective videoconferencing exchanges. This is mainly due to inadequate equipment, offering poor sound quality, deplored by more than 39% of users.

Headphones with active noise reduction that offer good communication quality promote interactions that are not always obvious. As one user of the TILDE® PRO headphones explains: “I was able to use it during my online meetings, during oral exams and in coaching, when I usually cannot stand headphones.”

2- Concentrate on work to stay efficient. While it is important to be present for the family, employees should still feel like they are in a good place to work. A user of noise-cancelling headphones expresses his satisfaction on the subject: “I was able to work in peace in the presence of my two collaborators, aged 1 and 3!” Another user is delighted to have found true concentration despite a period of mandatory telework.

Deconcentration is an issue that is rarely taken into account, but is particularly important since, according to the Ifop/JNA 2020 survey, 85% of professionals indicate that the annoyance caused by noise while working at home is likely to have repercussions on the quality of their work.

3- Preserve physical and psychological health. As more time is spent on the phone, the ears heat up and exposure to ambient noise can cause stress, fatigue, and sometimes very painful headaches, especially for people with migraines.

75% of professionals indicate that the annoyance caused by noise when working from home has repercussions on the general balance of their health (Ifop/JNA 2020).

Adding to that the stress and irritability of distractions. A teleworker exhausted between the cries of her children and the voice of her husband on the phone was able to find a solution with the noise-cancelling headphones TILDE®: “I was able to be more focused, less nervous and at the end of the day I didn’t have a headache!”
